Personalised Books for 1 Year Olds, Babies and Toddlers: The Age Guide

Personalised storybooks work from birth through to around age 8 or 9. Most are gifted for a first or second birthday, when a child is old enough to be read to but young enough that the book will last for years. You do not need to wait until a child can read to give them one.

What Age Are Personalised Storybooks For?

StoryStars books are designed for children aged 0 to 8, though the sweet spot is 1 to 6. Parents read the book aloud from the first birthday onwards. Children start recognising their illustrated likeness from around 12 to 18 months. By age 4 or 5, most children are following the story independently and pulling the book off the shelf themselves.

The gifting window starts earlier: a personalised storybook ordered for a newborn or a christening will still be a favourite at age four. Hardcover construction means it survives the years between board book and chapter book. One family told us their Look Like Me book had been read so many times by age three that the spine was soft. That is the goal.

Are Personalised Storybooks Suitable for Babies and Newborns?

Yes. A personalised storybook is one of the most enduring gifts you can give at a baby shower, christening, or first birthday because the child grows into it rather than out of it.

At this stage, the gift is as much for the parents as for the child. A newborn cannot follow a story, but parents can. And from around 12 months, babies begin pointing at pictures and recognising characters who look familiar. A book where the main character shares their face, their name, and the people they love creates that recognition early. By age 2, most children will point at the page and say “that’s me.”

Which StoryStars Tier Is Right for My Child’s Age?

Each tier suits a slightly different stage. The main variable is not the child’s age but how much detail you want illustrated into the story.

TierPriceBest age to giftWhy it works
Story StarterBirth to 4Name and gender personalised in. The right pick when you want something meaningful without stretching the budget. Fastest turnaround.
Look Like Me1 to 6Child’s illustrated likeness in the story. The tier most families choose. Recognition kicks in from around 12 months and holds through early school years.
My People My World2 to 7Likeness plus family members, pets, and toys written into the story. Works best when the child is old enough to know and name the people around them.
One-of-a-Kind3 to 8Fully custom storyline written from scratch. The richer narrative lands better once children follow stories, not just pictures. The flagship gift for milestone birthdays.

When Can Children Read a Personalised Storybook on Their Own?

Most children start reading simple picture books independently from around age 5 to 6. At that point, a StoryStars book becomes both a reading practice tool and a keepsake: the child who points at the page at 18 months is now the child sounding out their own name on the page.

Our books are written at picture-storybook level: short sentences, rich illustration, a beginning and an end. They sit alongside Julia Donaldson and Beatrix Potter on the shelf, not below them.

Is a Personalised Book Still a Good Gift for a Preschooler or Older Child?

Yes. Older children (4 to 8) often respond to personalised books more overtly than babies do. A four-year-old who has developed a sense of identity gets it immediately: “Mum, the character is ME.” That moment is as powerful at age five as it is at age one, just louder.

For older children in this range, consider One-of-a-Kind if you want the story to reflect their world specifically: their friends, their interests, the family’s actual values. For a six-year-old who loves space, we can write a space adventure with their family inside it. That is what the top tier is for.

Ready to order? Most families start with Look Like Me () for the first birthday, where the likeness recognition reliably produces the “that’s me!” reaction.
